Tony Charles, SOE DirectorDr. Tony Charles

Dr. Charles is Director of the School of the Environment, as well as a faculty member in both the Environmental Science Department and the Sobey School of Business. He teaches a range of environmental, natural resource and sustainability courses. Tony specializes in interdisciplinary research on natural resources and the environment, covering such topics as community-based management, ecosystem-based management and climate change adaptation. He works equally at a local level (with Indigenous and coastal communities across Atlantic Canada), nationally (in particular, providing guidance to the Canadian and Nova Scotian governments), and globally (e.g., with the United Nations and the Convention on Biological Diversity). Tony leads the global Community Conservation Research Network (www.CommunityConservation.Net), based at Saint Mary’s, which focuses on how communities protect their local environments. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC), a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation, a Gulf of Maine Visionary Award recipient, and Vice-Chair of the Fisheries Expert Group in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
